  • Exchanging current database  – to be able to process large amounts of diagnostic data simultaneously with no fear of performance issues or lack of scalability.
  • Improving security  – to assure that all clients’ sensitive data are 100% safe when samples are being processed and that the sensitive information should never be implicitly trusted to any one party, including servers, databases, or internal staff members.
  • Upgrading the infrastructure  – to ensure scalability and flexibility needed to adapt to changing business requirements and growth.

New Scalable Database

We chose PostgreSQL, a trusted, open-source database system that excels in managing large amounts of data, for its dependability and ability to handle complex queries. We designed the database schema to store encrypted data, ensuring the security of sensitive information, and built the architecture to manage large data volumes efficiently and securely. 

We used Apache Kafka, a real-time logbook for all data changes, as a replay log for event sourcing, ensuring all data changes were logged and could be replayed if needed, providing a reliable mechanism for data integrity and recovery.

GDPR Compliance

We added GDPR compliance to existing applications for laboratories, patients, and manufacturing units with a focus on user experience and security. The features included secure login, encrypted data entry forms, and integration with backend services. 

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

To further improve security, we implemented Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). It requires users to provide two or more verification factors to gain access to the system, adding an extra layer of protection.

Trust No One Strategy

To protect data, we used client-side encryption, so data entered by users was secured on their devices before being sent to the database. This guaranteed that even if the system was compromised, the data would remain safe.

Realization Time: From 2,000 up to 25,000 Samples Daily

The introduction of a new scalable database greatly reduced diagnostic processing time. Previously, the maximum capacity was around 2,000 samples per day during the pandemic, while in a typical qPCR lab in 2021, the maximum was 700 samples with 10 machines and two shifts. As a result, Lampseq can now handle 25,000 sample kits per day (with 1150% growth positioning them as a leader in blood diagnostics.

Benefit: The new system allows for handling a high volume of samples daily, giving our client a strong competitive advantage in the medical diagnostics market.

Solid Basis for New User Interface Development

By replacing the old database with a new scalable solution, Lampseq has created a strong base for developing a more user-friendly interface. This update will make diagnostic processes more efficient across various facilities and speed up the sample diagnosis nationwide.

The “Trust No One” strategy was implemented to make sure that personal data is only accessible to authorized Lampseq staff. This approach assures that sensitive patient data is kept secure and not shared outside the laboratory.

Better Understanding of System Requirements

Thanks to the iterative approach taken during the project, the client gained a clearer understanding of the system’s needs and custom software development process. This helped refine the future platform requirements and provided a clearer vision of what the new user interface could look like.
