Better Mobile Fleet Management app with Call&Report by Enera International

Background

Enera International AB is a market leader in communication systems providing and developing powerful solutions for emergency notification, tracking and fleet management. Hundreds of public and private organizations use Enera solutions globally to improve continuity, reliability and security.

Enera created Call&Report to help cities manage their budgets by helping them track the location data of road crews, parks and recreation staff and property managers. It’s a GPS system for planning, administering and monitoring public works. Operations for many cities are highly complex and haphazard, leading to maintenance delays, poor resource allocation and even fraud.

Nearly 200 municipalities across Europe use the app to dispatch road crews, organize park maintenance, and respond to storm damage and other property management claims.

Call&Report addresses all these challenges by tracking location data and planning optimal routes to ensure that work gets done and keeping a record of it.

Enera has been a long-term partner and Call&Report is the latest in a series of solutions we’ve delivered to the Swedish company.

Call&Report gives operations departments and municipalities unparalleled insight into how to best allocate public resources to address winter road maintenance and other public works. The app also serves as a record of completed work to support insurance claims as well as personal injury claim disputes, further saving finite municipal funds. Applandeo worked with Enera International to develop Call&Report as a cross-platform Xamarin application. The app improves efficiency and ensures accurate reporting by monitoring fleet vehicles and logging vital data.

Challenge Overview

The goal was to extend the Call&Report platform by adding a dedicated mobile application for iOS and Android. The app had to address two needs simultaneously. First, it had to enable operations departments to monitor crews on the ground as they respond to maintenance requests. And second, it had to be easy to use so maintenance technicians on the ground can focus on their work. That is why it has to be as intuitive and functional on a range of devices. As that is a 100% professional work tool, it has to be reliable and practical both online and offline. After project discovery where we learned about and examined the existing API, we suggested a Xamarin app that functions on both Android and iOS devices. One app for both platforms. Enera International approved and we began development.

Solution

In addition to the Xamarin app, other tools and technologies (like SQLite.NET or Rx.NET) we used in this project allowed us to easily develop and integrate the app with the existing Call&Report web platform. For example, the application uses multiplatform solutions such as Xamarin Native with the MvvmCross framework to share behavior and business logic in a single codebase across supported platforms.
